The Effects of Combined Aerobic and Resistance Exercise on Weight Reduction in Patients Taking Atypical Antipsychotics

Abstract
Objective : This study aimed to evaluate the effects of combined aerobic and resistance exercise on weight, BMI(body mass index), waist measurement and body composition in 4 patients taking atypical antipsychotics.

Methods : A total of 4 overweight persons taking atypical antipsychotics were selected for this research. The participant s body weight, BMI (body mass index), waist measurement, body components were assessed and were compared with those of after the combined aerobic and resistance exercise program. Exercise program was performed 40 minutes a day, 5 days per week during 16weeks.

Results : Results showed that after 16 weeks of exercise program, the participant s body weight, BMI(body mass index) and waist measurement were decreased at 16 weeks treatment compared to those baseline(weight loss£º1.2 kg(1.6 %); BMI£º-0.6 kg/§³ (2.3 %) ; waist measurement: 14.9 §¯(5.5 %) after exercise). and Body composition was positively changed.

Conclusions : This study suggested the applicability of combined aerobic and resistance exercise on weight reduction to overweight patients taking atypical antipsychotics. Judging from this study, this combined aerobic and resistance exercise program will be an efficient intervention for patients taking atypical antipsychotics to present weight gain and easy to apply for weight regulation in overweight persons taking atypical antipsychotics.
